Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are extremely stable chemicals with high resistance to chemical and biological degradation. Their capability of bioaccumulation through the food chain poses a risk of causing detrimental effects to the environment and human health. In Stockholm Convention 2001, participating governments agreed to take actions to reduce or eliminate the production, use, and release of certain of these pollutants. During the waste combustion in the Czech Republic high concentrations of POPs are released from waste incineration residues. Currently incinerator ashes are disposed of in landfills. This temporary solution is contrary to EU laws, since landfills are associated with hazardous substances release.
